There is nothing worse, or more soul destroying than a client who "knows" that their way is the "right way". After all they have hired you once why not make sure that they WILL keep on using your services, and happy clients are far more likely to pay your invoices quickly than disgruntled ones are.
I really don't see why you have such a "downer" on teaching clients what to expect and more importantly, what NOT to expect.
I'm not advocating that you "give away the farm" or train them to be an SEO "Jedi", but just explain what matters and what doesn't. Get them to look at, and for, the tangible benefits of what you do, rather than the esoteric and ephemeral "metrics" promised by the clueless SEO masses.
SGB PR cannot be put in the bank, and having 'X' number of links doesn't pay their staff whereas SALES do.
