Silly question, but do SEO professionals in general write their own articles or do they subcontract this task to a copy writer, maybe to a specialist in the organization if it's a larger business?

Well, eh... I figured it out. I went to the firm's service listings page and found the $275 offer under "Google Maps Placement". ! Their Basic maps package includes

First page ranking guaranteed
3 key phrases

for $275.

They also offer Premium and Deluxe Maps packages ($675 for Deluxe, city over 300,000). They have a second table for "Google Organic Search Placement".

This significantly equalizes the playing field. Of course now I need to figure out how to get maps out of their grasp. This also means that the relative miscommunicated the problem to me and misunderstood the layout of a google search results page. And I've been leading y'all on a wild goose chase, thank you....................

They may be writing link baity articles that just happen to have manipulative links embedded in them."

Meaning perhaps they have some business blogs reserved for this purpose that they keep up so they have some page rank?

Link baity articles with manipulative links by way of an article service or something they own and they can update the links at any time?

Since it appears you have discovered that they were in fact using Google Maps/Local to promote your relative's Website, I think we should leave the wild speculations unfinished.
