Okay, so I should put in the error text for real users in the template.php. But that is how it originally was. So I am back to square one:

The problem is: Google says: I found a lot of soft 404's
These are all pages with an existing page like template.php, but not existing pid's.
These pages all give the same error: The target-URL doesn't exist and your server does not return a 404-error (translated from Dutch).

How do I solve this?

Sorry to keep asking questions, I am not sure why I keep being puzzled by this concept. But somehow I just don't get it. What does Google want me to change?

So I am back to square one:

Nope, you are NOW returning a 404 status for that URL.

What does Google want me to change?

The HTTP response status code that the URL returns.

It is not the content that determines what a "soft 404" URL is, but the response status code of 200 (OK) along with the content. No matter what content the URL responds with, it is the status code that counts, you could return the original content of the URL along with a 404/410 response and search engine would/should honour the status code NOT the content.
