I recently read this page google help that generally recommends switching your settings in Google Webmaster Tools to have a preferred domain of either the www or non-www version of your site. I think the idea is that your site will do better if inbound links are not spread between "www.domain.com" and just "domain.com." However, I already have a 301 redirect in my .htaccess to direct non-www version to the www version...so would changing my settings to choose a preferred domain in Google still be necessary?

A redirect does not change the links that Google finds or knows about, so as far as the webmaster tools are concerned they are split, setting the "preferred form" should stop it nagging you.

But no, you don't have to.
