Hi,
Anyone know of the "right way" for Setting Preferred Domain In Google Webmaster Tools?
Uing Google Webmaster Tools, I want my Preferred domain to be www.example.com . But get an error message :
Part of the process of setting a preferred domain is to verify that you own example.com/. Please verify "example.com/."
thanks

You need to register both example.com and www.example.com with GWMT so that you can set a preferred domain.

thanks Tiggerito . .
Question:
I added the "example.com" version in GWT.
I want to set the preferred domain to the "www.example.com" version.
Do I do this in the "example.com" or "www.example.com" site in the list in GWT? Or Both ????
Also, some people are saying to DELETE the nonexistent "example.com" site from the list, and others are saying to keep it.
I also read in the Google forums that someone said they lost all their google ranking after doing this. I don't know if that is true or not.
This is confusing, to say the least, . . . typical Google @$%&# again.

I answered the question :
I just set the Preferred domain to "www.example.com" for the site "example.com".
I checked the Preferred domain in "www.example.com" and found it automatically reset itself to "www.example.com", after I did the above.
The option was automatically selected to :
* Display URLs as www.example.com
I guess I'll just keep both versions, but who knows.

Keep both as that is how you authorise the preferred domain. If you delete it then Google will go back to considering them as separate domains
I've never heard of lost ranking due to doing this.
