I’m working on WordPress site and the client decided to add an important page that’s indexed in the search engines to the top navigation menu as a sub item
Turns out if you do this WordPress changes the URL of the page to include the main navigation menu item within the URL (are you kidding me!)
Their developer said they have a plug-in that would take care of this. What it does is applies a 301 redirect from the original URL to the new one. Better, but not ideal.
Is there a way to add a page to the navigation without changing the URL?

Open the navigation file and insert the link there.
The side navigation is in wp-content/themes/WHATEVERCURRENT/sidebar.php.
Whatever you're running for a top navigation should also be in the themes/WHATEVERCURRENT/ folder. WHATEVERCURRENT will be the name of the theme you're using.
If the file is doing formatting like adding > or other symbols, you'll have to add them to the link too. You can get those by viewing the page source and copying them.

You should be able to define a custom menu under APPEARANCE without having to get into the code on the current version of Wordpress. Some themes may not support this functionality but it is a native capability of Wordpress.
