recently in awstats i have noticed that one of our sites is reporting that visits found the websites via strange URLS, for example porn, gambling type websites. when i look at those sites there isnt even a link to our site. Why would awstats report refferals from these sites? im guessing our site has been targeted in someway but not really sure whats going on to be honest or what to do (if anything).

It's just "referrer spam". Use google analytics and you won't see it anymore.

New referral spam software is now able to fool even Google Analytics. If you don't see the link on the referring site, then the "visit" was probably faked by software.
