Backlinks And Updates Etc

While we are waiting for the next PR update, I was wondering to what extent does a PR update make a difference?
I know that Google knows the true PR of every site etc, and the PR value is just an indication etc but does this get calculated every day or only when a PR update appears?
The reason I ask is that I have been working on new links for 3 months, and have seen my ranking improve, as I have made content changes at the same time, I am uncertain which factor is making a difference etc.
As non of the new links appear as backlinks is harder to know whats working and whats not etc.

I've had loads of links confirmed as being added by various directories- some since just before Xmas 2003- and they're still not listed as backlinks on either google or alltheweb. I know they're there as I've checked to be certain but they're just not getting picked up- I have no idea why

Thats because there has not been a page rank update since January.
My question is, does Google SERP's use the latest link position or does it work off the database that drives the PR and backlinks you can see when you use the Google link tool etc?

I think there is a good chance an update will occur this coming weekend since it is the new moon on Saturday and the January update occured at the time of the new moon.
Just because links arn't displayed doesn't mean they arn't being picked up. I always check the source on a links page to make sure there is no meta noindex, nofollow. You also sometimes get people who use a redirect to reach the links page containing such a tag and some people will take your link down after a week or so once they think you have checked. If any of these things occurs there is the opportunitry to inform the partners of that site and get them to swith links to you.

But that wouldn't affect Alltheweb, surely? Would it? Am still a bit of a n00b at all this stuff.Thats because there has not been a page rank update since January

However, Page Rank is not the be-all and end-all of backlinks. The anchor text used on new links also counts, and I strongly suspect that is being updated all the time. So, even though you may not yet be getting an increased PR for new links, you may nonetheless see an incremental rise in the rankings because of the anchor text in your new links.

This implies, that either that true PR is being calculated regularly anyway, or that what ever aspect of linkage that effects SERP is updated constantly.

The third possibility, Clare, is that PR has very little effect on rankings in your niche. This implies, that either that true PR is being calculated regularly anyway, or that what ever aspect of linkage that effects SERP is updated constantly.

Did you actually get 80 more links this past month? Or did google just find more? And if they just found more for your site, isn't it also likely that they found just as many (percentagewise) new links for all the other sites in your SERPS? And if virtually everyone went up the same percentage of backlinks due to the deeper crawl this month, then doesn't it make sense that the rankings would be unaffected assuming that there were no Keep the Faith When the Keep the Faith When the Algo Changes going along with the PR update?

I have been adding on average a link a day since November, and it is these that have appeared in my backlinks.
During this same time period my SERPS for my keyphrases, has been rising at slow and steady rate. Which implies the links have been picked up and worked into the SERPS.
For 4 different phrases they has been no change, these seems too great a co-incidence and its hard to accept that everyone else has made exactly offsetting changes.
