One possibility that might help is to check the site in Google Webmaster Tools. That will tell you the average ranking, as seen by all visitors for whom the site shows up as an impression. If you really want to get an idea of how your ranking is moving, GWM will go part way to meeting that need. But, remember, it's an average, not a definitive figure.

As others have indicated, there's really no such thing as being "ranked first". Different searchers will have a different experience.

Thanks Miki.

Have a nice day.

Instead of piddling about trying to force search engines to bend to your bidding, why not simply work with them and provide them with exactly what they want?

LOL Chris, I afraid that he has no idea about how does it works.

One thing is for sure, no one knows exact recipe of what algo likes and what is good for John might be not so good for Peter and I agree with you that only by trying, failing and trying again, if you lucky you can hit jackpot.

Have you tried finding out where the links are coming from for the 1st position? Maybe you can get a link from the same location?

That will do no good at all, link counting will only tell you what SEs want you to know, and do you REALLY THINK that they (Google especially) are going to tell you which links actually have "useful ranking weight" or which links the actually count?

Instead of focusing on links and rankings, you should be watching your search referral traffic. As you publish more content you should see growth in your search referrals. If you don't see growth, then you need to step back and consider what may be limiting your growth.

There are all sorts of reasons that have nothing to do with who ranks first or where they got their links.

If you're not publishing new content at least once a week, don't expect much growth in your search traffic.

Michael, can I be so bold as to offer a very slight amendment to your excellent advice:
If you're not publishing quality new content at least once a week, don't expect much growth in your search traffic.
