My website wordAwordB dot com, is currently ranking 2nd at google.com when i search for wordA wordB (with space or without space).
Another site is ranked 1st entitled wordAwordB dot org.
How can i achieve 1st position and how long is it gonna take?
I guess link building will help out a lot (the 1st website has same page authority with my website based on seomoz).
Any other tips are welcome.
Thanks in advance.

Twice as long as it is from one end to the middle, or you could try the wet finger test.

Keep clicking on your result. Eventually Google will show it to you first.

Really disappointed
I know the question is .. let's say worthless , but a proper answer isn't too much to give ..
And I'm talking to Jill of course ./ Chrishirst is just screwing around all the time and I barely can see a useful post from him .. but he keeps posting anyway .. so I don't expect anything from him ..
I'm out of here
PS : starting to miss Randy in here .. where is he anyway ?
@The thread starter :
you are in the second position, which is good, so just keep doing what you were doing and you will be first someday
The first step however, is to take a good look at your competitor website, and ask yourself a question : is your website better ? does it provide better services / information ? is that information presented in a better way ?
Continue to add useful content, continue link building and start Social marketing campaigns (create facebook page, Twitter, Digg, Stumbleupon, Google+) , ask your visitors to join your profiles , and make these pages grow ..

How long is a piece of string?
Is it windy?
If you expect exact answers to questions;
A: You are in the wrong job.
B: You are at the wrong forum.

Thank you so much, this i what i looked for.
Just a few basic guidelines. E.g should i focus on linkbuilding as suggested in the original post or should i pay attention to social media as well.
FYI: i am not sure why you mention that the question is worthless though.
I mention wordAwordB for the following reasons:
A. I think it is against the terms & conditions to send actual urls
B. I want to focus on the that i am looking for my website's url (not a keyword oriented search). I just type my companys name in google.com.
Thank you so much once again.
Not sure why my original question is pointless.
I did ask just for a few guidelines e.g focus on linkbuilding, check competitor, check titles, check keywords on X page etc.
And regarding "how long its gonna take", there are dozens of correct answers such as: at least 1 month, at least 3 months, not sooner than 6 months, it depends on when google scans both websites, it depends on THIS, on that etc.
Have a nice day.
Regards,
Steve

The ONLY answer possible to that question is somewhere between a few hours and never, and if anybody tries to give you an precise answer they are either guessing or lying!
There are so many things that can affect "rankings", many of them being nothing you can control,
eg: which server, in which cluster, in which datacentre answers your query

Or as Jill said, keep searching for, and clicking on your result, eventually Google will display it first. However ONLY you will be the one to see it at #1, everybody else will se it at whatever position it "ranks" for them.

I do not want to be the one who sees it at top position. I want it to be ranked first.
I am surprised that you did not suggest that i should do the search and search for the result that i want OR that i should type the correct url a priori.
I know that there are many issues that i cannot control (thanks for mentioning that). Obviously i asked for a few suggestions on the topics that i can optimize.
Have a nice day.

Well you can't have that!
You can only affect what you see in "rankings", others may, or may not see the same.
Or of course you could take a trip back to pre 2003 when we still had the "Google Dance" and everyone's results were the same for ~28 days in the month and in upheaval for the other three.
Other than that you can learn that "checking rankings" is a now a thoroughly pointless pastime and get over it.
Instead of piddling about trying to force search engines to bend to your bidding, why not simply work with them and provide them with exactly what they want?

Unfortunately there's no such thing. How can you control others' personal searching experience?

One possibility that might help is to check the site in Google Webmaster Tools. That will tell you the average ranking, as seen by all visitors for whom the site shows up as an impression. If you really want to get an idea of how your ranking is moving, GWM will go part way to meeting that need. But, remember, it's an average, not a definitive figure.
As others have indicated, there's really no such thing as being "ranked first". Different searchers will have a different experience.
