Google generally won't bother with a site unless a page they spider regularly has a link pointing to it. Do you have that?

So does google really only index you if you have non-directory (ie., non Yahoo index, non-PFI, etc.) links going into your site that get spidered regularly?
For the long-term, I'm working on quality link exchanges, etc. with relevant sites, but also looking for other ways to get on google's radar screen more quickly.
I've been indexed in Yahoo for several months, but google hasn't spidered me yet.
Is a PFI in AskJeeves through positiontech going to help me get spidered and indexed by google?
Is the $299 Yahoo express directory really the key to getting google's attention more quickly?
Thanks for any help

Thought I would return to this thread and let y'all know how it went. We got the website indexed in a week. I was pleasantly surprised as DMOZ put it through within three days. Considering I have another website waiting with them for 4 months. I guess it's down to the individual editor from that section.
Next step was MSN. I signed up with Microsoft BCentral and they put the client into their Business Directory and they also guarantee a visit from the MSN-Bot. This helped and within a few days the client was in MSN.
Next step the was an entrance into Verizon Shopping directory that bought the client four thousand upwards visitors a week. I don't know how may he turned as he hasn't told me but this pushed traffic right up and it's been climbing ever since for him.
He loved the Verizon deal and we took him to a few other heavy traffic portals.
Link campaign happened by itself almost once he was in verison then came a load of link request from some sites that had PR's of 5 and 6.
I had him join a couple of worthwhile organisations that charged a small fee that went to non-profit charity groups they gave him a link back one of them had a outward of 8/10 the other other had a outward of 7/10 and his rank started going up.
Finally two weeks with site match at Yahoo and he was all over the place. All in all a succesful campaign.. including the full site design.
It's nice when something goes all to plan... for a change ;-)

Thanks Jill, I appreciate that. It shows that when your back is against the wall and you got a pushy client who wants results yesterday, then it can happen.
Great job, Vinnie!
I mean I literally pulled out all stops. it was also a challenge to myself see if it could be done.

Forget the Verizon free listings.. I was banging my head up and down trying to get a link that would work with them.
No, this was the paid stuff... it gurantees they are dealing with about 5 million customers ready to buy a product.
Of course my client did not get 5 million cutomers but he got 4.000 hits in the first week and wants to keep in there so he must be turning a few of them into customers easily.
BTW: his business is the travel business... online travel agency for business call bookings.
Also, he sells Florida vacation homes.
