Is there a tool or a service (paid or otherwise) that we can use to best find out which sites link to another?
There is spyfu and a few others but would you suggest that the best is just link: when typed into google?

No, that's probably the worst. (Doesn't work.)
Your best bet is something like the SEOMoz tool or Majestic.
