I've been approached by an SEO company wishing to buy a text link from my homepage and they have asked specifically that i include the no follow tag.
I am suspicious as why they would want to do this because they are exactly the type of company that normal goes round buying links for their PR value or influence on search rankings.
Anyone have any idea what they might be up to??

Aha! They want to see if the nofollow link passes anchor text. I'd be interested in knowing what they learn from it, if they're willing to share.

I am sure they will be happy to share, in which case i will let them go ahead and test it. As the link is going to be no followed i cant see that i will be breaking any webmaster guidelines by accepting this paid text link.

It's no different than having an ad on your site, or even having Adsense.

Every link you have on your pages is a promotional advert, even ones to your own pages.

This is true. The fact that it's on your home page means also one other thing - every time your home page has a screen capture taken, that link may be visible and part of the promotion. Paying less for a no-follow link with good visibility can be worth something too.Every link you have on your pages is a promotional advert, even ones to your own pages.
