Buy Adwords and do sitelinks. Be the highest bidder and have the best quality score.

It is not just a bidding thing. Having a good quality score is also very important as Jill mentioned. If you are the highest bidder but have a poor quality score it is unlikely that you will obtain the top position

Googles Quality score is about the quality of your ad and its relevance to the search term. It includes factors such as your ads click through rate, the quality of your landing page and the presence of keywords in your ad copy amongst other things.

Mike, I think you're confusing the position of an AdSense ad with the ranking of a web page.
When the others advised you to aim for a high-quality ad, I think they meant that the ad should be targeted at search terms that are relevant to the product or service being advertised, and that it should contain text (or an image) that will persuade people to click on it.
When you asked about the benefits of a site having a URL in the form <popular tourist destination>.com, you're asking about the effect that might have on the ranking of the site in search results. That's got nothing to do with AdSense (or other forms of paid advertising).
