Hi Folks: I have a colleague who was asked to use Alexa data for reporting purposes for competitor data. I have always understood their data to be heavily skewed. Has anything changed with them in recent years?

I've been using SEOMoz for competitor review data as a better alternatives.

Comments? Rants? Whatever??

Alexa changed its algorithm a few years ago. It is better than it once was. Whether it's as good as SEOs would like it to be, I suppose that's a matter of opinion. But I would not judge today's Alexa by yesterday's criticisms. I occasionally look at the data.

Any of the competitive research tools (including Alexa) are okay as long as you're using them to compare the metrics of similar sites. You can't read too much into the actual numbers, but you can see if any particular site gets more traffic than another.

But also, they're only useful for sites that get a fairly large amount of visitors.
