Determining File Sizes
Posted 12 March 2004 - 08:35 PM
One of my sites has suddenly gone over on disk usage by about 26 MB. Looking at the info in cpanel, I can see my databases are 6.4 MB of that total, but can't figure out what else is taking up so much space.
Is there an easy way to see folder/file sizes on a server? I'm trying to find the culprit- there's no way the html files are taking up that much room. Any ideas?

I believe others like wsftp also shows you this info.

All my html/images are downloaded on my computer and they add up to around 50 MB. According to the hosting company, I'm using over 175 MB. There's a huge discrepancy there somewhere and I'm trying to figure it out before I contact them.

I don't know if log files count or not! That's the only guess I can make as to what's causing it. Will have to get support involved but I typically don't have a lot of faith in them...

In my experience, they do. And they can really add up. When I left my old company I gave them a long document I'd written called "On the Care and Feeding of Your Web Site," which included instructions on downloading, or at least removing their log files. They didn't do it. At one point I went in and grabbed about 30MB of files. And it's a good thing their site doesn't get a lot of traffic -- one of the sites I run generates that much in about 4 or 5 days, and I download the log files twice a day from that one.

Have you found out whether the logs are the culprit?

Also, you might want to check that the host isn't doing Automatic Backups and storing them in a place that counts against your storage. If they don't delete those they'll add up in a hurry. That all depends upon your host.
I do daily backups of every site on my servers (cron job), but I don't store those in a place that counts against anybody's disk usage. And my cron script automatically deletes older backups. Not every host is as nice as I am though.
