I was wondering, what are the directories/sites you definately want have your site submitted to? I know of:

DMOZ
Yahoo
Inktomi

Are there any other important ones? Is it still important submitting to altavista?

Inktomi isn't a directory, and you don't actually have to even submit to them. They will spider your site as long as you're listed in other directories or other sites.

Other good directories are JoeAnt.com and Gimpsy.com, for starters.

I think we've discussed this in another thread also.

Business.com for B2B looks like a good directory.

Business.com would be very nice if it weren't for the fact that it costs 99 USD per year to be listed there.

I'd highly recommend Business.com as a directory even with the admission fee to any ecommerce site serious about doing business on the web.

"Business.com's primary audience is at-work users, mostly based in the United States"

People at work usually surf to buy, even if they are looking for themselves! The clients I've added to this targeted business directory have been happy with the fee investment and have seen traffic from it.

I don't think goguides.org is free anymore.... anyone know for sure?

(I am not connected to business.com in any way!)

That is way too expensive for the service rendered. We will host your entire web site -- assuming small to medium and less than 1000 visits per day -- for less than that.

GoGuides.Org is free for those that become guides. Simple form to fill out for approval.
For those that do not wish or have the ability to become guides, an Express Review service is offered as an alternative for a one time fee.

compar - what you're saying about web hosting has no relation to getting a good listing in a quality directory like business.com -
web hosting alone does not bring you any business - it's the marketing of the URL that does. so I don't see your point.

the $99 annual fee isn't really a 'service rendered' like web hosting. It's more akin to renewing your Yellow Pages listing (yea, in theory, that IS a service rendered) - so that your target audience can find you easily within your business category.

now that said, Business.com does have a limited distribution, but it IS highly targeted. and that $99 gets you 5 links to your products/services - all very good for google PageRank/inbound links if you want to look at it from that perspective. while it may not bring a ton of direct traffic, what it does bring is MORE qualified visitors, more likely to convert.

as far as other directories go, don't overlook Niche industry directories - Yahoo & Dmoz usually even put a subcategory for "web directories" under a given topic - start your search for directories relevant to your industry there.

I've also recently discovered:
ipl.org
vlib.org

but be aware, both want top quality, informational links, not solely commercial listings.

http://jayde.com/ and http://www.where2go.com/ are other B2B directories.
