Hi,

I have a website (.com domain) with thousands of incoming links, which is ranking on #2 for a very competitive keyword on Google UK, and #250 for the same keyword on Google Australia. What do you guys recommend to increase the AU rankings?

1. Obtaining links coming from Australian websites
2. Creating a new site with com.au domain, same content
3. Creating a new site with com.au domain, new content (the site is HUGE)

Other?

Please let me know your thoughts

Best,
Carlos.

You don't really provide much information. What is the content on the site relevant to?

From what you say, I would guess that you are hosting your .com site on a UK server, in which case (probably) the only way to get the Australian results is to Geo target the site in Google Webmaster Tools. This would however kill off the UK results that you currently have.

Thank you for your replies, the site is actually a maternity clothing shop, with many thousands of pages indexed, the server is hosted in the UK. The site sells online only, and its not optimized for UK local keywords in any way.

Is there any way to gain rankings for Google.com.au other than changing my hosting location?

Does your content make frequent reference to Australia? If the only geolocal information that search engines have to work with is where the server is hosted, I'm not surprised to see you're doing better in the UK than in Australia.

I will add that content and see what happens, I will also build some AU links.

Thank you very much for your suggestions!

Carlos.

I would consider creating Duplicating the site with a .au domain name with the intention of each of the 2 ranking in their own Geo Results. I expect there are about to be some quite strong opinions expressed on that approach now that I've suggested it.
