Thanks all for the helpful feedback. After some time to think about it, I've decided to scrap the "tacked on" blog and replace it with a Tips page on my site, which I will fill with a wealth of useful, relevant content (non-salesy tips and advice) to my potential customers. I think my time will be better spent -- at least initially -- focusing on enriching the content in my site, rather than thinking of ways (ie blog) to get backlinks pointing at it. I guess if I do the former very well, at some point the latter will start happening.
