This was posted in the ODP blog

http://dmoz.theblob....rticle_id=26378

It basically says that google is no longer going to list the DMOZ cats along with the url's on the serp's, but is going to offer them via 'more results'.

Could this be the last gasp for the DMOZ & Google partnership?

I've often wondered why they mixed in directory results in the first place. As a searcher, I want to see editorial results from their index, not DMOZ listings, not Froogle and certainly not pay for inclusion!

Way to go Google.

DMOZ's link popularity benefit will still be there though as long as Google is recognizing backlinks from them.

Sounds to me like they warming up to :-

a) Introducing their own directory - semi independent of Dmoz
;) Offering paid inclusion in it???

I would seriously doubt that. I think it has more to do with making sure their editorial results are free of other elements (like PFI listings - Yahoo!). Besides, they have a large enough index that they really don't need a directory or directory results.

To take on the endeavor of creating your own directory would be quite a undertaking. I think Google has much bigger fish to fry.

 I think Google should drop the ODP entirely, as in my opinion the ODP is one big mess anyway and corrupted too.

I'd like to see Google buy ODP from AOL, inject a bit of cash in it and get it cleaned up. A small number of paid editors working in the more commercial categories would do wonders for the quality of ODP.

Although I seldom use the Google Directory I do find myself clicking on sites listed in the directory more than those that aren't, and in that way the listings carry some value.

ODP grew into a mammoth. When you have a gargantuan network of volunteers, it is only a matter of time before it is affected by poor management.

IMHO, they have lost sight of their reason for coming together in the first place.
