Hi,

I know how to do an .htaccess rewrite, however I am in the situation where I need to make backlinks to the new simpler fake URL. To clarrify in this example.

1. long1234567890.html is the actual webpage which routes via a 301 redirect to www.example.com/short.html.
2. When a user types in www.example.com/short.html, a page not found error appears.

My question - How do I make the new.html retrieve the long1234567899.html webpage whilst still keeping the new URL?

Regards, Meeker

I think you have it backwards, if I'm understanding you.

You want to 301 redirect the short one to the long one, not the other way around.

Jill, thats almost the case. When the user types into their browser the short url, I want the long url webpage to be retrieved, whilst still keeping the name of the short url. In effect, the long url is completely hidden.

Does that make sense?

Right, so just redirect the long URL to the short one.

What I don't understand is how the user sees content when they type in LONG URL (which redirects to SHORT URL) but when they type in SHORT URL they see no content. Where is the actual content? Is this being delivered dynamically from a database?

The content is indeed dynamic and comes from an ecommerce solution I am planning to develop at the moment. I will do some tests and come back to you. Thanks for all the input so far.
