I am thinking about spending a small amount of money $50 to get some links, I was wondering that what would be the better way to go
should I get couple of listings in established paid directories or should I try to buy relevant links from other websites ?
what would you recommend ?

I would hire a link building expert to get me relevant-topic related links from genuine websites, with a good age and recent cache date. If you look in the right places you will find a good deal for your money.
