I've noticed for a long time that there has been a website design company with decent Google results for many terms I also compete on. In this case, I will focus on the term "baltimore website design". The company is not in Baltimore, in fact, they are in New York and as far as I can tell have nothing to do with Baltimore, yet they continue to get nice rankings in both Google and the new Yahoo SERPS for this fairly competitive term.
The page that comes up is [deleted] in Google and [deleted] in Yahoo. They appear to be the same page (I'm assuming theres some domain masking or something going on). The first has a PR 3 and the second no PR.
Here's the real interesting part though:
When I look at the page listed through my browser, it talks all about website design but doesn't say anything about Baltimore except in the title. I did a view source and find all for Baltimore, and its all over the HTML code, in links, text, etc - all over the HTML code but none of it actually appears on the site.
Just for kicks I typed in the page's URL and substituted Chicago for Baltimore. They seem to be doing the same thing for all major cities. Yet again though, no mention of the city on the page, but its all over the code. I'm assuming the SEs are ranking it high b/c it has the terms all over the code.
How are they doing this and is it only a matter of time before they are caught???
