I was wondering, let's say someone give a link to my site. The page where the link is get crawled by Google. How long would it take to see the benefit? Will it differ from one site to another? Would it be always on the next update?

Google claims to be updating its index continuously. However, since no one is able to track the value of a link in Google's index, there is no way to knowledgeably or authoritatively answer your question. Some quacks will make wild guesses from time to time. I suppose if you put on a blindfold, pin all their wild guesses to the wall, and pick one at random you have as good a chance of finding a good guess as of making one.
NOTE: Reasonable people also occasionally make wild guesses but they TELL you they are making wild guesses.

It is always a lot of factors when your site goes up the ranking! So the best is really to do what you have to do and not worry about all these guess and predictions but it is in human to stick to mysteries and try to solve mysteries!!!LOL
