What I have found hard, and stil find, is to get people who came for XYZ to look elsehwere. That is virtually impossible, apparently. If they came for the downloads that is where they will stay no matter how enticing I make it to look elsewhere as well.

To put it rather bluntly: nobody likes to spend a lot of time on a website without finding what he/she is looking for.
Some sites are visited longer (reading what is there, scrolling up and down), but that time does not count towards going to deeper levels.
Making navigation so that everything is shown in an obvious way, so that visitors can get to what they are looking for, is obviously contributing to the reducing number as the levels become deeper.

This surely illustrates that EVERY page on a website must be optimized for the search engines, it's no use optimising one or two and hoping surfers will navigate to others through your snazzy navigation structure.
Nielsen showed that seachers don't even look at the navigation! Having more than minimum breadcumb navigation is a waste of time and space. The space is best used for gripping content.

Some sites have got some really horrible navigation where I wouldn't want to go to deeper levels, or it isn't obvious that there are deeper levels.
Being able to jump down to a deep level straight away, keeps the traffic to a site down (desired when you pay for traffic), and visitors can still find quickly what they are looking for, and tey might even be back later.
