Reading the google guidelines I just came across this alternative solution to using the no-follow tag for links you buy for advertising:

"Redirecting the links to an intermediate page that is blocked from search engines with a robots.txt file"

Would this be a way to buy links (for traffic) without getting into trouble with google (or bing or any other SE that might be important in the future)?

If I remember correctly, the reason why so many SEOs arent convinced of using the no-follow thingy is that it might give away that youre an SEO/ a savy webmaster (or was that not the reason?!?!?! somehow it seems everything on the no-follow topic is no-followed in my brain! Ive heard it a dozen times but just cant seem to remember this one).

If you'd use such a web page and block it from the SEs in your robots.txt - file...would this really keep the SEs out? Or are they known to violate your "guidelines"?

Nobody has to be afraid of buying advertising on other people's sites. You can direct them anywhere on your site you want.

If Google had a problem with that they'd be in trouble for restraint of trade and trying to monopolize the online advertising business.

They are an advertising company. They can't punish people for advertising other places besides them!

Nofollow is an arbitrary attribute that was invented by search engines.

Do you really think that most people and companies who advertise online have even heard of it? Why would they? And why would they ever think to use it?

That's a good point! hehe

So youre not using no-follow on links you buy for the traffic...because all that would do is give away to the search engines "Im SEOing this site!",and if you dont youll simply be considered one of the normal companies/webmasters who simply dont use no-follow on stuff like that b/c they have never heard of it?
