I am looking at taking certain pages out of files and making them first level pages.
I am thinking of doing a robots disallow, to stop the old pages being accessed by the robots, while the new pages are indexed.
Should this be sufficient for Google.

Blackpool, don't block the robots, put a redirect on the old pages if the new pages replace the old ones, it will do more good.

I agree with owg. If, however, you would like to block robots anyway, I think that Google follows the robots meta tag so you could put "follow, noindex" in it...

Oh, the answer to your question is yes, that would be sufficient for Google but that is probably not the best way though.

I know this might sound like a daft question but....
Do I get rid of pages that I don't want anymore by just removing them altogether? The ones which I am not redirecting I mean. :)
Also, how long should I leave the redirects on for. Will it be just until the other pages are indexed?

That shouldn't be a problem, as long as you've got a custom 404 page. If you don't, people will be sent to the browser's standard "not found" page, and that's likely to send people away.
