I'm not sure what you call it, but when you search from Google's home page it offers helpful suggestions as you type. Assisted search maybe? I'm supposed to be a keywordsmith, but I have no idea what the term is!

This feature has become common in many sites, such as Amazon, Netflix, etc. and as a search marketer, it always interests me what shows up in the menu as I type my query. In fact very often it saves me from having to type the whole query.

Then yesterday I was searching for info on Imelda Marcos, and what should pop up but some type of ad integrated in the menu!

Weird, huh. Danny Sullivan wrote about this a few months ago. I haven't seen it yet myself, but that could be because I tend not to search from Google's home page.

Thanks! I feel so much more competent when I know what the official word for something is.

I nuked the Google Toolbar months ago, which is why I search from the G home page.

I've been amazed at some of the spots i've seen my adwords ad show up on. I regularly search for my keywords to see how/where my site is showing up and I noticed this happening last week. Just kind of sat there with my mouth open..

I'm curious if ads will show up on google Buzz any time soon.

Search suggest can include both sponsored ads as well as direct (unsponsored) links to a given site if Google is confident that's what you're searching for. The screenshot above actually appears to be the latter.
