Actually, I was passed on the details of a UK company who will carry out automated backups on a nightly basis, and will store 4GB of data for £120 a year.

I discovered that an interesting side effect to buying a DVD burner was that I was actually interested in doing backups again....

I am going to get one of them DVD burners soon, there was one on sale from E-buyer last week £70 in tax, and I forgot to order it :fingerscrossed:

The problem with DVD burners is that recordable DVD's still cost a fortune (I think). Of course, half of my day has now been spent zipping up my music files into archives that are small enough to fit onto a single CD.

Isn't there some setting in WinZip that lets you split up a zip file into a bunch of smaller files of a certain size? That would make this project go much faster.

My lazy method of taking backups:
3 hard drives
hd1 Windows & installed software
hd2 & hd3 documents and downloaded stuff (software, service packs etc.). Everything is on both disks.

Protects against hd failure. I probably should burn my important documents to a cd.

Installing Windows is a lot quicker now than it used to be.

Yep. I tend to use WinRAR instead, but the ability to set archive sizes has been around forever - since people needed to put stuff on floppies, anyway :)

It should be in the documentation.

DVD-R's cost about $2 USD now, so they are pretty reasonable. I buy them in spindles of 25-100 and save a fair amount of money that way.

I also use it to burn my kids DVD's onto dvd-r, then let them play the dvd-rs. Once the DVD-R gets all scratched and destroyed, you make another from the original

On a timely note, Microsoft have released a CD which contains all of the available Windows Updates for different versions

Order the Windows Security Update CD

I would think this is a very useful addition to the CD collection, particularly as M$ have decided to stop providing support for the older OS's.

Available in the US, Canada and Internationally.
