I'm running a tattoo website and have been submitting to a whole lot of free web directories for 2 months now, without any greater results.
I have no customers, my site is informational - gives information in form of articles about different types of tattoos and also displays a bunch of photos/designs. My goal with the website is to drive traffic to some as an affiliate. So I'm not selling anything myself.
The people coming to my site come from all over the world, but mainly the united states.
Are there any tricks for getting these links from authority sites? any ways to make deals with them? or is it possible to just send them an e-mail saying that I've been linking to their site, and ask for a favour of them linking back to mine?
Any strategies that could help me would be awesome!
Should I keep on submitting my website to these free directories? Has anyone got a list of "really good" directories?
I truly do appreciate any help I can get!
Thanks
Luke

Good Solid Content is my strategy.
You need to offer something completely unique in your chosen niche...something that the average person couldn't discover on another site. What can you offer them, your customers, something they just have to have?
In my experience people don't buy what they need, they buy what they want!
If you have no customers at all then this calls for some serious offsite SEM.
Be mindful of your targeted ROI that means DO NOT DEVIATE FROM YOUR BUDGET!
Luke, it is all about search and discovery and above all..tons and tons of patience chap!
As far as directories are concerned, find reputable directories DIRECTLY connected to your niche if possible.
If you panic, one thing I can promise you without a shadow of doubt is that you will lose the plot!!

Well, I'm offering really good information on tattoo designs + Im also offering thousends of free tattoo designs in all categories.
And as I said, I'm not selling anything myself, just driving the traffic to affiliate products.
Now are there any other "good" ways of creating backlinks except for web directories and article directories?
Thanks

Nope. Unless you trawl the web on hands and Knees asking for links BUT that being said ( I skipped past the affiliate bit in previous post.. doh!) I think you will have a hard deal getting people to link to your site if it is just full of free crap and pointed at an affiliate site.
To my knowledge most directories aren't to keen on it either.
As I said you need a site worthy of links and you won't have that with zilch content. Fact!
I could give you the name of the best article ditectories on the planet..if your content is rubbish..whats the point??

Authority sites are authorities for very good reason--they don't just link out to other sites unless they find something they really want their own site visitors to know about.
So no, it's doubtful you'll get an authority site to link to yours as it currently exists, from what you've said.

Not very many sites at all are providing 1000's of free tattoo designs all categorized...
Yeah, please give me that list of good web directories, would appreciate it!
Thanks

Be honest with yourself: Is this information truly useful, or is it just a way for you to drive clicks to your affiliates?

Ask yourself why?
Because I've seen similar sites out there having alexa page rank of 30 000 - 50 000, driving thousands of visitors daily, making $5000+/month.
Isn't there always space for another similar site, using the same tactics?

Advertising/Marketing power would have most likely have been a factor.
A great quote a great man once said:
" I don't look for 7 foot bars I can jump over, I look for 1 foot bars I can step over"
Luke it's about jumping the big boys by being smart and that chap, I don't care what anyone says, in this world (the web) that starts with content.

Okay, so you want good links? analyze the back link profiles of these amazing traffic generating free tattoo websites and find out:
- which sites are linking to them
- which pages they're linking to
- why these sites are linking to those pages in particular
Then, create something of similar value (be it content or a free widget, etc), contact the site owner or decision maker of the sites in your competitor's back link profile and ask if they'd link to your content since they're linking to the other site's content. BTW, when contacting the site owner, make sure you contact them directly and not through an info@ black hole which shows zero effort and is a sure fire way to get ignored. Find out their name and their DIRECT EMAIL address (this level of personalization is critical and will separate you from link spammer), find out their twitter profile, follow them, retweet their stuff, start a relationship, then reach out to them through an email. It's called link outreach. It takes work. It's the work involved that makes most quit or never even try. But if you follow my advice, you'll be rewarded with links from sources other than article marketing and low value directories.

But with all due respect BIK, you can have the personal email of chiefexecutive@chooseanysite .com, if the person receiving that email looks at the site and sees that its full of BS, he's going to think "hmmm, you know, I don't want my customers to see this site, in fact, I don't even want google to see that I am linking to this site" .
My real point is this:
The ROI better damn good to spend the amount of time carrying out your suggestions on something that is only a PART of SEO not all of it.

Acquiring great links may only be "part of SEO," but frankly they are a major part. And anyone who's ever engaged in the sort of coordinated, targeted, personalized and aggressive link outreach that I've outlined above understands it's value. For the rest, it falls on deaf ears b/c they're not willing to put in the effort and don't have what it takes to:
- create something of unique value, or similar value to a competitor
- dedicate themselves to marketing it effectively

[*]create something of unique value, or similar value to a competitor
[*]dedicate themselves to marketing it effectively
Anybody who does not have these key ingredients or worse, not willing to learn shouldn't be in this game...end of!
