I have an English website that is doing fairly good in Canada. I wanted to do a french ( for the province of Quebec) but I was wondering if it was not better to use my site who is doing well and add a french section if yes:
Would it be better to do a subdomain?
or create a folder with the french section?
Is it going to affect my existing site?
Any output of someone that went trough the experience of it would be greatly appreciated.

Subdomain vs. subdirectory, it doesn't matter. Either or works just fine so pick whichever is easiest for you to manage and maintain. What I see people do most often is to use the language abbreviation (eg /fr/ or fr.domain.com/) as the differentiator.
It won't negatively affect your current site, if that's what you're asking. If anything it's probably going to have a positive effect since you'll be adding a whole new language full of keyword phrases from which you may attract traffic.
