As a minor consideration, I believe Google is still likely to show more entries in any given keyword SERP for subdomains than for subfolders. Having multiple entries in a SERP does increase the possibility that the searcher will click through to one of your online properties.

That used to be true, but they've changed that a lot over the past year. They now often will show multiple results from the same domain if they believe they are the most relevant. Which lessens the previous advantages to using subdomains.
