You somehow managed to get yourself hired to do a job you know nothing about. Then you don't want to put in any real effort to learn how to do it, but still hope to be successful?
Sorry friend, it just doesn't work that way. With any job there is a certain learning curve. You have to be willing to put in the effort.
Long story short, SEO isn't something you can learn the in's and out's of in a week or two. The best of the best spend literally years building up a base of knowledge to lean upon. Not to mention that each site and situation is a little bit different, so different tactics may be necessary.
You shouldn't have put yourself out there for this job if you'd never done anything like this before. And whoever hired you should have done more research.

Read like crazy.
There's a lot of reading material for SEO out there, and a lot of it is speculative or wrong. High Rankings seems to take the approach of only teaching the techniques that are universally known to work, so pretty much anything you get from Jill's articles or Randy's posts can be taken at face value.
The basics can be learned pretty quickly, but you have a lot to absorb in a short amount of time. Actually implementing the things you've learned is much harder than you're going to expect. There are a lot of subtleties that you're going to overlook, and your work will be pretty sloppy.
Does your employer know you've never done SEO before?

He's got quite the sense of entitlement.
At least awaishamid is begging for help rather than demanding it. I feel like that's a big step up.

That is not the issue here.
The issue is:
"My problem is that i have been hired to increase the ranking of a website in Google and i have never done that before"
and this:
"....i dont have time to read big books on SEO...."
Now to me it sounds like he wants a pint of beer for nowt!
Do you know what?....I would like to be Warren Buffet and in the unlikely event that I was in his league, it's highly unlikely to happen overnight...definately not if I couldn't be bothered to put in the leg work to at least read up on how he made his fortune.
