I'm trying to decide on 1 or more of the following options for picture optimization. I would use all 3 but I'm concerned about duplicate content penalties.

1. Host images on my own server
2. Use Picasa
3. Use Flickr

Any opinions about best practice for maximum gain playing by the rules?

Thanks

There's no such thing as a duplicate content penalty.

You can host your pics where ever you want.

They have been for a long time, but there's no reason to be.

Scared stiff of lying to Google, definitely yes. No need to be just plain scared of Google, no need at all.

However back to the question.
I would host pictures within the Web Site every time if you want the Pix to benefit the site by bringing visitors. Make sure the Pix are located close to relevant text and Google Image search will find and store your pix to be found by the right searches. Providing your site is reasonably well optimised, and your market sector is not too competitive, this can be a good source of fertile visitors.

Plus remember that in some cases where/how you host the images may have an effect on who has control over them.

Like piskie I always like to host all of my content elements, including pictures and video. Then if I want to increase the potential audience by making certain things available on other platforms I'll upload them to those other platforms too. But the stuff you see on one of my web sites is always self hosted, except in very, very rare circumstances.
