How long does it take Google to notice that the mirrored site is gone? Is there anything I can do to bring it to their attention?

Did the new site show up in the SERPs in the place of the old site?
If it is what happened, I've seen it take anywhere from 4-8 weeks for Google to realize that the duplicate site is gone and re-list the other site. It kind of depends upon the timing of when the next update occurs.
<I'm also going to move this to SEO No No's so that it gets more exposure.>

I am with randy though in that unless this happened to you, having duplicate content up might have had nothing to do with your rankings going south.

I recently had and still have the problem of old links being shown, what some people mentioned and is mentioned on the Google website is to use 301 redirects.
I had lots (30) of old pages listed on Google, now only one of the old links is left, while the new ones are now slowly being indexed. Before that I tried to use a 404 which did not work too well. In the webmaster help section on the Google website there is the mention of 301.
