This is a strange situation I've run into and I was just curious about your thoughts on this.
I know PageRank doesn't matter, but I have a site in which after the recent PR Update, 2 of it's pages increased their PR even though each lost backlinks according to Site Explorer.
Does anyone know why something like this would happen?

That's because PR is not the number of links, but the number and quality. A handful of quality links will out trump thousands of
ones every time.

Google claims that Toolbar PR is not based solely on links. But like Jill says, you only need a few good ones to get a nice boost in internal PageRank, which is somehow reflected in the toolbar numbers.
