Ok, so I didn't know the best place to post this but I have a few sites, all of them are sites that market to people looking to buy something. Those are easy to find your customers, if you have a site that sells Ipods, then your keywords are variations of IPod.

But I really want to start a directory site, but I want it to be a opt-in site where we must pre-approve sites. The problem I'm having is how do you promote a directory site of this kind for lets say Web Designers. People searching for the keyword web design or web designers, are people wanting to find web designers and not the actual web designers themselves. Any ideas on how to promote a site like this. I don't know what keywords to optimize for or even if this is worth doing because if you are a web designer, what keywords would you actually be searching for?

I'm trying to think outside the box, open to any suggestions.

Well for directory type sites the most common keyword modifier is probably going to be the word directory. So on that front you'd probably want to optimize for something like web design directory, web designer directory and the like.

There are also sites out there that function as a Directory of Directories. (Now there's a good search phrase for you!) The old guard of those is probably ISEDB.com. You might want to get your directory site listed at a few of those.

The main thing though is to give some serious thought to how you're going to make your directory different and better than the other 10,000 web design directories out there. Because it's an already well saturated market. Been that way for at least a decade.

Thanks for the reply! I'm open to all ideas, it's a weird position to be in. You have a free service that hardly anyone wouldn't mind signing up for if they know you exist, but its hard to show those people that you exist... unsure.gif

You do realize there already are tons of directories like that out there, right?

What's going to set yours apart from them? I would think about that, and that will help you to determine how to market it.
