Is having a link from a trusted (online since 2003) website with high established PR (5) .. But the site is "unrelated" to mine .. is this benefic for PR and/or ranking ?

Yes.
It would be more beneficial on the SEO side of things if the anchor text of the link either is or relates to your targeted keyword phrase. Even not having that will help in a general sense, but having anchor text relevancy is a rather important part of the equation.

I think that all links count if they are from a website with a PR of 5.
Whether they are related is important but not as much as your own websites title and tags.
I'd go with this link.

it will absolutely benefit your site.
in fact, if i had my choice of getting a link from a trusted site with high PR or a link from a relevant site that's not as trusted, i'd choose the trusted, authoritative link hands down every time over the more relevant link.

New here today and like to ask in relation to the OP does the actual link have to come from the page with the PR5 or the domain (which might not have the same PR)?

Well, accepting the notion that Toolbar PR may or may not accurately reflect the Real PR of a page...
It's the PR of the linking page that has bearing. A link from a PR1 page on a PR9 domain will not give you a PR9 link. It'll be a PR1 link.

I did wonder as people have asked me for link exchanges based on their high PR but when I've seen which page would be linking the PR is much lower.
