I use a US company (i-dentity.com) for my .com domain name and for hosting. Packages start from $5 per month and have never had any problems with downtime. Maybe I should become a salesman for them. Why would you prefer a UK based company, apart from nationalistic reasons?

Personally I would prefer a UK company as then I will definitely have no problems getting my web site into Google UK.

Cheers

James I would be careful saying that, as the BULK of UK re-sellers are physically located out of the UK. I would run a physical location check on them before signing up , Digital Point have one available free http://www.digitalpo...ebsite-country/

better to be safe than sorry ;)

Good point.

All of the UK domain name / hosting packages that I've used have been UK firms that are based in the UK. This is what I effectively meant, although perhaps it didn't come out quite right!

Cheers

I think that maybe I did not make myself clear as well. Many UK based companies, actually sell server space outside of the UK but do not tell you. This si why a check on their sites should be carried out to ensure their server is UK based. None of this matters anyhow if you are using a UK domain extension :-)

123-reg do claim to be the cheapest in the world or double the difference back. But for web hosting it's always cheaper to go to the Us.

Currently we use a virtual server at DSVR and tend to register most of the domain names through them if possible as get a discount.

I'll add to the list of GoDaddy users. They also provide a way to manage all your domains through one control panel, and they are very good at providing notices when domains are coming up on renewal.

As for hosting, Jodohost.com has been very impressive with their low-cost, full featured hosting packages. I have 5 domains hosted with them for less than I could host one site with my previous host. All of these sites use Cold Fusion and require database connections. The servers are in Virginia or Pennsylvania, I believe, but it is owned and supported from India. Excellent uptime and guarantee, etc. I better stop before ya'll are convinced I am the owner!
