Would you guys recommend using blogger or some offsite blogging software or installing wordpress and having the content under the same domain ? what would be better seo-wise ?

Assuming the subject-matter of the blog is that of the main site, I'd definitely recommend putting the blog on the main site. Growing that site through the blog is likely to be much more beneficial than building out a separate site that happens to link to the main site.
