I never saw this coming...

My client has a primary domain name (company.com) and a secondary name (product.net).

Product.net is simply parked and pointing to company.com

The site is fully optmized.

When I run a ranking report, company.com's pages are not well ranked, but the parked domain has got great positions for loads of major keywords.

How's this happening? Surely this is not right?

Sure it's right. The domain is parked after all.

If it were me I'd 301 the currently parked domain over to the real site, unless there were some pretty convincing business reasons for keeping them separate.

To the search engines, there's no difference between a parked domain and the actual domain. They both provide a 200ok http server header response.

So they just choose whichever one they want. Sometimes they choose both.
