it's perfectly normal for a site to do well at first and then drop out of sight for awhile.

Hi Jill,
for how long do you estimate the "honeymoon" to last?

The new site honeymoon?

It would be hard for me to say exactly because for my own new sites they either sit there sort of live but not really because they don't have a normal amount of content and haven't been optimized at all for months and months, or I start link building right off the bat.

What I hear from others though is that the new site honeymoon seems to be in the 3-4 months range. If you haven't started getting links by then you take a tumble.

Wait, do you mean how long that the site will stay high in the listings?

If so, it really depends on how competitive the kws are that you're targeting. It likely won't stay doing very well for anything remotely competitive for more than a few days or weeks. I don't work with many new sites, however, so I'm probably not the best to answer this.

I do have my own new site I'm working on and looking into these things as well though!
