hi
I'm thinking of purchasing a domain name which has two words.
To ensure best seo practice, is it best to simply stick one word after the other with no hythen or is it better with a hythen or another character?

Determine which is best for branding, then use it.
For instance, if you're going to ever need to speak the domain name (eg in a phone convo or in radio/tv ads) you'd probably want the non-hyphenated version. Or own both and have one pointing to the other.
There's simply not enough SEO value in hyphenating the domain name to trump branding concerns.
