What methods work for promoting new forums? I know I hate finding one that looks good but does not have very many members. So how do you get people to join and get one going if people leave because there are not enough already? In our instance, it is mainly targeting small business.

A lot of getting a forum off the ground has to do with who is already in your inner circle that will come over to help you start the community where there hasn't been one before. Of course those folks have to have in interest in your subject matter as well.

In other words you almost need to have folks who are already part of a loose knit community that you're going to weave into a tighter, larger community. Some of those will probably make up your forum staff.

As an owner of a forum I can tell you it's harder than it looks and a thank less task - for me very little upside so think about what you really want from it. penny.gif

1. Seed it (put in a few posts)
2. Add in a few open ended questions
3. Drop emails to people you know are likely to answer it
4. Beer, seriously buy people a beer if they answer a few questions!

Driving people to interesting topics on the forum via Twitter might also prove to be helpful.
