Is Directory Submission Not So Effective?

hi all
as i read in some of the sites that
we can optimize a website without needing directory submission and there submission will not make much of the difference in SERP's at all
is it correct

Directory submissions alone are not going to get you where you want to be, if that's what you're asking.

On the other hand, you need to have some links in order to get the search engines to notice you. Directory submissions can serve that purpose, although they certainly don't have to.

ya they are not only one source to optimize but in that they said its waste of time and no use

That depends on which directories you're dealing with.

Yeah, directory submission will be not effective especially when you choose to submit it on the free web directories. I think this is not a reliable way in promoting a site, the major drawback in submitting it on a free directories is that the time consumption between the time of submission and being listed on the directory. To many links submitted and very crowded is often the scenario in the directories, with this situation in the directories possibilities sometimes is that your submitted link will be lost. And if ever be listed your link will be on that least value groups of sites.

I think submitting it to delicious.com, stumbleupon, digg, and the most popular ones might be worth it.
