Google Just Improved Its Ranking Algorithm Re: Snippets?

Just noticed this. Hadn't seen it before until now.

I've been goofing around with some searches and it seems the farther away on the page the words are from one another, the longer the description snippet is. I guess in order to get all the words in the description. BUT... it also puts up sites with normal 150-ish character descriptions that DON'T contain all the words.

Is this a beta thing or has Google officially announced this is a new feature?
