I was just reading an article on getting more traffic, published in a newsletter of a somewhat well known and (I thought) somewhat well respected webmaster's resource site.

The second piece of advice is

Are there any real experts still advising this? Does this suggest that the author is not as much of an expert as his podium might make one believe? Is this an area of controversy I've just happened to miss so far? I thought submitting to the engines (especially via automation software) was not just old hat, but a filthy old broken hat you found at the dump and left well alone, no?
