I would like to add two paragraphs of text from the Wikipedia to my web page.

My concern is that search engines will recognize the content from Wikipedia and bury my page because it contains duplicate content.

Am I best off without this content?

according to google having duplicate content will not harm your ranking as long as your page doesn't have JUST duplicate content. you should always make sure you add a fair percentage of unique content and mention the original source when you use other people's content
