Hi all,

All links to my home page that I've ever set up over the last few years at other websites or directories are linked to: http://www.widgets.com or www.widgets.com either of which will take you to my home page.

I just found out (duh) that my (real?) home page address is: widgets.com/index.htm My web guy explained this as "it's the default file for the website, if you just enter the web address without a filename, that's the page it'll automatically go to."

All 3 URLs will get you to the homepage.

Has the link value (in Google or Yahoo's eyes) been diminished at all by this or should everything be fine?

The search engines will usually attempt to sort this kind of very common thing out and merge them all together.

However if you don't want to leave it to chance you'll want to see what exact status code is being returned by the server for each address. Only one of them should be 200 OK. The others should be 301 Moved Permanently, pointing to the address that answers 200 OK.

You can check this with a little PC application called WebBug if you want something to check status codes with often. Searching for the name should bring up the download page for this free app. Make sure you check off HTTP Ver 1.1 in WebBug if you use it. It defaults to HTTP Ver 1.0 I believe and that was incredibly buggy.

Or if it's a one time thing you'll be checking I have a little header checker script over on my personal site. It's also a freebie.
