Okay, i didn't know how to word this properly in the thread title so i'll try to explain it.
1: Two keyword combinations that mean the same thing.
2: The only difference is that one version has a larger search volume according to a variety of KW tools.
Example:
Car Loan versus Car Finance
With "Car Loan" having more search volume then "Car Finance" i would want to rank a main static page on my blog for "Car Loan" and here comes the question:
Would it be more beneficial:
A: To use "Car Loan" as the anchor link text to link to the page from the main navigation and thus creating a site wide link?
- Optimize the page itself for "Car Loan": Body and page Title and Description tag, etc
- When appropriate link to this page from inner pages with link anchor text "Car Loan" and variations of "Car Loan".
B: Or B use "Car Finance" for the main navigation anchor text and having "Car Finance" as the site wide link?
- Optimize the page itself for "Car Loan": Body and page Title and Description tag, etc
- When appropriate link to this page from inner pages with link anchor text "Car Loan" and variations of "Car Loan".
Keyword ranking difficulty is not a factor for me, i understand that that is also a crucial factor to even pursuit trying to rank for a specific keyword phrase.
I'm more interested in knowing if a site wide link of your own site could be either more helpful or holding you back?
Thanks in advance!

All other things being equal, which they never are, I'd work the most popular phrase in there more often than not. So I'd have Car Loan or Car Loans as the nav anchor text, have it in the body/content where appropriate, but also have some body/content links using closely related phrases too. Car Finance, Finance a Car, etc.

Why not do both? I don't think anyone could tell you for sure which is the best way to do it.
These are the kinds of questions that have no definitive answer. And if someone gave one, I certainly wouldn't believe them anyway!
Experiment with one way, and then the other if you want. But I'd just do both if it were me.

Thanks for the input guys, i really appreciate it!
If i got some spare time i'm going to create a test to see how things will work out.
1: Site with 5 pages with a descriptive anchor link only in the nav.
2; Site with 5 pages and descriptive anchor link only in the content.
Any tips on how to perform SEO tests?
